Dutch Anchor Beam Barn

In An Age Of Barns, Eric Sloan described the Dutch Anchorbeam Barn as "the most European of American barns". This mighty barn frame is uniquely characterized by the huge Wedged Anchorbeam that spans between Purlin Posts across the center aisle of the barn. First introduced by Dutch immigrants to the Upper Hudson River Valley in the late 1600's, our version of this early barn style incorporates a few modifications that make the building more practical for modern day uses. Higher side walls provide more usable space both above in the side aisle lofts and below on the main level. If desired, a main loft floor (not traditional) can increase the use of the upper section of the barn. Possible options might include a Pentice Roof over the main doors (commonly seen on early Dutch Barns), and a large 42" Cupola.
